The Spirit of Leadership – by: Bill Thomas
Another purpose for these posts is to energize your efforts to grow spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, ethically and morally stronger.
Dictionary.Com lists numerous entries for their definition of ‘spirit’ – however, for sake of simplicity, let’s examine 3 of those meanings:
“8. an attitude or principle that inspires, animates, or pervades thought, feeling, or action: the spirit of reform.
9. (initial capital letter, that is, “Spirit”) the divine influence as an agency working in the human heart.
10. a divine, inspiring, or animating being or influence” – here are 2 Examples from the Old Testament of the Holy Bible:
Book of Numbers Chapter 11: Verse 25 – “And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spoke unto him, and took of the spirit that [was] upon him, and gave [it] unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, [that], when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.; “
Isaiah, Chapter 32: Verse 15 – “Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.;”
Your spirit, as we see in those definitions, can best be defined as an entity (a ‘some thing’ such as a noun, which is a person, place or thing).
This entity that we call spirit evolves from any one or more of the following causes, your spirit can contain or it:
=> Is based on one or a combination of mental or emotional attitudes,
=> Is based upon a set of ideals or principles, or
=> Is generated or influenced by some external agency or
=> Is a resulting reaction to an outside divine or supernatural agency
Therefore, this spirit of leadership can be either good or evil, moral or immoral, positive or negative, open-minded or closed-minded, generous or stingy and miserly, and so on.
Thus your spirit of leadership has a critical decision or rather a moral judgment to make.
And morality is usually determined by one’s own understanding derived from past experiences, your morality emanates from your exposures to and acceptance of the wisdom of counselors, moreover, your spiritual education or lack thereof will have the greatest impact upon the nature of your moral choices.
As a manager of people, which of these following two leadership philosophies do you favor?
1) The use of your authority and power to control people and pressure them to produce?
2) The use of your authority and power to serve those who are under or following you and meeting their needs as they work at accomplishing their goals or tasks?
