Multi-faceted Attributes of “Space-Time” Dimensionality in a Social Universe

We will wrap-up this quick overview of the space-time continuum by exploring the principles identified by Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and explaining some of his Theory’s counterparts in human society.

Without trying to take these concepts too far afield, we hope to inspire your appreciation for the multiplicity or textural richness of space-time dimensions in a social reality.

Einstein’s theory of relativity describes space-time as a physical-metaphysical construction existing to provide observers of various physically-active phenomenon some strategy for explaining their observations as their perceptions occur from their “frame of reference”.

His theory was designed to help scientists understand the truly personal interpretations they made of the physical universe – that is, when looking at the Sun as it travels from East to West, we fail to take into account that our locations here on Earth determine what we think is happening to the Sun during its daily journey. The Sun we see shining in the sky is actually the Sun as it was approximately 8 minutes before – because it takes light from the Sun 8 minutes to travel to the Earth, so in effect, the sun we see at this moment is the Sun as it was 8 minutes ago.

Now thinking about the stars we see in the night sky, the light we see being generated by those stars (which are the Suns of other solar systems) is light that was generated by that star more than 100, 1000 or even 1 million or more years ago.

Einstein was trying to help us appreciate that whatever we think we see, is subject to a different observation by some other observer looking at the same thing but from another “frame of reference”.

For instance, if I drive a car north on a highway and you drive your car south on that same highway, we are likely to see an accident happening in that highway’s median in completely different ways.

In the social realms, there are different ‘frames of reference’ which tend to influence our perceptions, interpretations and comprehension of any specific social event. These “frames” hold us and carry us along and move us towards certain types of actions, decisions, conclusions and evaluations just as firmly and just as definitely as any physical or tangibly apparent frames might do.

Similar to Einstein’s observers of physical phenomena, we have a firm set of emotional, intellectual, physical, cosmological, spiritual, developmental, cultural, racial, demographical, psychological, political, physiological “frames” which we apply to every social act, event or situation.

Therefore, as far as any one human being is concerned, space-time in the social universe can be composed of any number of different dimensions – space-time will tend to locate its answers in a where-when, a who-what or a why-how construction, while your ‘frame of reference’ will consist of or be colored by your personal, professional and philosophical experiences, dispositions or evolutions.

Note the perceptual forms of influence being exercised by one’s focus on any individual dimension – each dimension provides for a contextual interpretation of the social-space-time continuum. In the Imagination Age, leaders must educate and encourage their organizations to view every social space-time description using all three dimensional constructs and the widest possible variety of reference frames.

As a corollary to these phenomena of the social-action continuum, there are constructs in place providing the more metaphysically solid grounding of our scenario universe. I refer to these elements as forming the canonized, paradigmatic, generally-acceptable beliefs, truths, assumptions extant in this firmament.

These dimensional structures emerge through processes involving the socio-mechanical energies of our interpretations, imaginations, inspirations and ideologies.
